Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng) has a long history in several medical traditions as an adaptogen, which means it has the ability to increase the body’s resistance to stress and improve overall health. This quality makes ginseng a potential candidate for many purposes, and treating erectile dysfunction may be one of them. A review of seven randomized clinical trials of red ginseng as a remedy for erectile dysfunction was published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. Six of the studies compared the red ginseng with placebo. The reviewers found that use of red ginseng provided a significant benefit in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and was even helpful for men whose ED difficulties were associated with psychological issues. (Jang) In one study in particular, 20 of 30 men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction who were treated with red ginseng reported a significant improvement in erectile function. (de Andrade) Ginseng root is standardized on content of ginsenosides, and a typical amount is from 4 to 7 percent ginsenosides. A suggested dose is 200 mg twice daily. More on Ginseng
