What to Expect from a “Smart Prostate Biopsy™”

What to expect from a Smart Biopsy - Better imaging and diagnostics reduce anxiety over treatment optionsThis content is from our sponsor. The sponsor has sole editorial control.

A Smart Prostate Biopsy procedure is available for the most commonly performed prostate biopsy approach, the transrectal biopsy. Before the biopsy, you will need to:

  • Abstain from food and beverages from midnight before the procedure
  • Take any antibiotics your doctor may have prescribed
  • Complete an enema if your doctor prescribed one
  • Tell your doctor about any allergies you have to medications, including sedatives and anesthetics

When you arrive for your transrectal biopsy, you will be asked to wear a hospital gown and to lie on your side with your knees drawn up to your chest. After being given a sedative and/or antibiotics, the doctor will activate Artemis, which takes 3D images of your prostate and accurately identifies the exact sites where the doctor will insert or drive the biopsy needles through the rectum wall for the samples. Each biopsy needle will initially feel like dull pressure when the needle is first inserted, followed by a quick, sharp pain that lasts a few seconds when the needle is inserted into the prostate gland.

Once all the biopsy samples have been taken (and the number can vary from 6 to 12 or more), the procedure is over. The entire prostate biopsy process takes about 20 to 30 minutes. After a brief time in a recovery room (unless you have elected to take general anesthesia), you can go home. Men who choose general anesthesia may need to stay in a recovery room for several hours.

The reassuring part of having a Smart Prostate Biopsy under guidance of Artemis is knowing that you have elected to use a procedure that utilizes the most sophisticated 3D visualization imaging technique available, and which also provides detailed, accurate, and comprehensive prostate biopsy results offering peace of mind when it comes time to make treatment decisions. Artemis also stores all the information about your biopsy for future reference so your doctor can accurately monitor your progress and follow-up visits. If you should ever need a repeat biopsy, Artemis has all your baseline and subsequent information about your prostate biopsy stored for quick access by your physician.
