Prostate Cancer Treatments Increase Risk of Death in Men with Heart Disease

Among men who have high-risk prostate cancer, the combination of hormone therapy and radiation therapy has been shown to improve overall survival. A new study, however, shows that hormone therapy may increase the risk of death in men with prostate cancer who also have pre-existing heart disease.

Radiation Therapy and Prostatectomy for Advanced Prostate Cancer

An evaluation of radiation therapy for men who had undergone prostatectomy for locally advanced prostate cancer showed that adjuvant radiotherapy was associated with better disease-specific survival than salvage radiation therapy. Adjuvant therapy is typically given soon after primary treatment as a preventive measure, while salvage therapy is delayed until disease recurrence.

Five Year Outcomes Published on CyberKnife Radiosurgery for Prostate Cancer

The multi-center study, published in the January 10, 2011 issue of Radiation Oncology, found that 93 percent of patients had no recurrence of their cancer at a median follow-up of five years, a rate that compares favorably to results obtained with other treatment modalities, including surgery and conventional radiation therapy.
