Avena sativa, also known as wild oats or wild grass, has seeds that are a rich source of carbohydrates and fiber, as well as iron, manganese, and zinc. As a supplement, avena sativa is used as a sedative and to enhance libido in both men and women. Avena sativa also reportedly is effective in treating erectile dysfunction and in premature ejaculation treatment, but no scientific studies support these claims.
An extract from oats called avenacosides are reported to enhance the release of luteinizing hormone, which then stimulates production of testosterone. (Fukushima 1976) Manufacturers of avena sativa supplements typically claim that avena sativa extract decreases sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and releases bound testosterone to free testosterone in the blood, which makes testosterone more active. However, no published studies support these claims. Anecdotal evidence suggests avena sativa is a mild sexual enhancer and may work best along with stronger herbs such as tribulus terrestris and horny goat weed. (Sahelian)
