MSM imageMethylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring sulfur compound and a nutritional component found in many foods. It is credited with several important health benefits, including the ability to eliminate toxins from every cell in the body, including those that make up the prostate. It also has been shown to be an effective anti-inflammatory agent, and contribute to the integrity of joint cartilage and other connective tissues. Because MSM is 34 percent sulfur, and sulfur is a crucial element in the integrity and health of hair, nails, skin, and joint cartilage, all of these areas may be improved with MSM supplementation.

The value of MSM in prostate health may be its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving abilities, which may make it a candidate for treating BPH and prostatitis, although no studies have been published on these uses. Thus far experts have not figured out exactly how MSM works, but it seems that it inhibits the activity of inflammatory factors such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes, hormone-like substances that create inflammation associated with pain.

A suggested dose of MSM for arthritis is 1,000 to 3,000 mg daily. (University of Maryland) MSM is considered to be one of the least toxic substances that you can take, and there have not been any reports of toxic effects or allergic reactions.
