Potassium is a mineral that is involved in regulating pH balance and blood pressure, converting blood sugar into energy, maintaining heart function, and contracting muscles. Some argue that a potassium deficiency sets the stage for cancer by altering the pH balance in favor of cancer growth. So far, there is limited scientific evidence linking potassium and prostate health besides maintaining overall function.
The RDA for potassium is 4,700 mg, and people rarely need to take supplements of this mineral because potassium is found in a wide variety of foods, especially all meats, some fish (e.g., salmon, cod), fruits, vegetables, and legumes. If you are taking loop diuretics to treat high blood pressure or a heart condition, it is possible you may have low levels of potassium, as these medications can deplete the body of the mineral. However, do not take potassium supplements for any reason without first talking to a healthcare professional.
