Tai Chi

Tai Chi pictureTai chi (also called tai chi chuan) is often described as meditation in motion because it utilizes gentle, flowing movements. Although it was originally developed for self-defense, it has evolved into a graceful form of exercise that reduces stress and tension and helps various other health conditions as well. There are many different styles of tai chi, each with its own subtle emphasis: some focus on health maintenance while others lean toward the martial arts aspect of the practice. The intensity of tai chi depends on which form or style you practice.

Several studies have looked at the impact of tai chi practice on stress reduction. One pilot study conducted in Germany noted that participants experienced improved heath and a decrease in stress during tai chi practice. Rather than just go on the word of the participants, the researchers measured levels of the stress hormone cortisol before, after, and at follow-up and gathered physical evidence of the improvement.
